EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S REPORT

On May 15th (Armed forces Day) at Lasdon Park the Friends of Lasdon held their annual flower sale. It was a very busy and a lot of plants were sold. Thank you to the Chapter members that helped; Al Zawiski, Al Singerman, Terry Keogh, Matt Coffey, Jim LaManna, and Bob Miller.

On May 30th Westchester County will held their 3ra Annual veteran appreciation Day at Playland. It was great, everyone seemed to have a good time. The estimate of the number of veterans who attended was 1,500! Also our table did very well, thanks to Rick Burns, Bob Miller, Phil Trerotola, Clyde Hardman, Charlie Schiavo and Al Zawiski.

At around 4:30 we had our Annual barbecue for the PTSD Unit At Montrose behind building 15. Thank you AI Singerman and Larry Barnette. After that we went down to the River for our Watch Fire.

On Monday the 31St we marched in Chappaqua. Afterward at 2:00 PM will held our ceremony at the Trail of Honor at Lasdon Park.

Our biggest fund raiser of the year, the Fol?De?Rol in Armonk will be June 12t and 13th. Please stop by our table and help out for a little while or just visit with your fellow Chapter members.

On Monday the 31st we will be marching in Chappaqua. We will meet at about 11:00 AM at the grocery store parking lot. Afterward at 2:00 PM will hold a ceremony at the Trail of Honor at Lasdon Park.

Take care of yourselves and each other.

JUST A SIMPLE MARINE

He was getting old and paunchy, and his hair was falling fast, as he sat around the Legion telling stories of the past. Of a war he had fought in, and the deeds he had done. In his exploits with his buddies; they were heroes everyone. And tho sometimes, to his neighbors, his tales became a joke, All his buddies listened, for they knew where of he spoke. But we'll hear his tale no longer, for of John has passed away, and the world's a little poorer, for a Marine died today. No, he won't be mourned by many, just his children and his wife. For he lived an ordinary, quiet sort of life. He held a job and raised a family, quietly going on his way; and the world won't note his passing; tho a Marine died today. When politicians leave this earth, their bodies lie in State, while thousands note their passing and proclaim that they were great. Papers tell their life stories, from the time they were young, but the passing of a Marine, goes unnoticed, and unsung. Is the greatest contribution, to the welfare of our land, some jerk that breaks his promise and cons his fellow man? Or the ordinary fellow, who in time of war and strife, goes off to serve his country and offers up his life? The politician's style, in which they live, is sometimes disproportionate to the service that they give. While the ordinary Marine, who offers up his all, is paid off with a Medal and perhaps a pension,... small! It's so easy to forget them, for it is so long ago, that our buddies went to battle, but we know. If it was not the politicians, with their compromises and ploys, who won for us the freedom that our Country now enjoys. Should you find yourself in danger, with your enemies at hand, would you really want some cop?out, with his ever?waffling stand? Or would you want a Marine, who has sworn to defend, his home, his kin, and Country, and would fight to the end? He was just a common Marine and his ranks are growing thin, but his presence should remind us, we may need his likes again. For when Countries are in conflict, then we find that the Marine's part is to clean up all the troubles, that the politicians start. If we cannot do him Honor, while he's alive to hear the praise, then at least let's give him homage, at the ending of his days. Perhaps just a simple headline, in the paper that might say: Our Country is in morning,.. for a Marine died today!

What is a veteran?

A veteran is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check
made payable to "the United States of America," for an amount of "up to
and including my life." This is Honor, and there are way too many people in
this Country who no longer understand it.

Hooray for Dennis Miller! He said recently on his show, regarding the Judges who declared the Pledge of Allegiance unconstitutional: "So, your Honor, the Pledge is unconstitutional because it says under God. Guess that means when you were sworn in with your hand on a Bible, and at the end of your oath repeated, So help me God that makes your job unconstitutional, therefore you have no job, which means your ruling doesn't mean s?

Special "Letter to the Editor"

Letter to the Editor
I can not believe that our military court martialed six reservists recently for collecting equipment that they needed to complete their mission. They were charged with theft, destruction of Army property and conspiracy to cover up the crimes. What crimes! In the military you get the equipment you need no matter what-steal it from the military or the Country you are fighting in. This is the way it has always been. In fact in the past you were awarded for showing initiative and courage. When I was in combat, after a fellow soldier was killed you took his weapon and his ammo. Is that stealing? This is what happened, they were ordered to march from Kuwait to Iraq. They did not have enough vehicles to do the job. They had the good sense to take two tractors, and two trailers left in Kuwait. A few weeks later they commandeered an abandoned cargo truck and stripped it for parts. Their Commander looked the other way, which in my opinion was the right thing to do. Well the Commander Major Cathy Kaus, CWO Darrell Birt and four other members of their unit were court?martialed. They got dishonorable discharges, lost their pensions, lost all veterans benefits and can not vote! CWO Birt had 26 years in the Army! They did not take anything for their own benefit. Please everyone, call your Congressmen and Senators right now to reverse this outrages ness!

Note from the Webmaster: My dad was a Captain in the 504 Supply Bn, WWII. North Africa, Sicily,  Anzio and over the Rhine. Most of the time trying to keep up with Patton's tanks! He told us many times of how difficult it was near the end to tell what the hell a truck was originally, there was so much commandeered material on it. From where? The side of the road wrecks (both US and German or Italian), from civilian sources and cannibalized units of their own. This was not an order he needed to issue, this was basic military common sense! Accomplish the mission! Everything else comes second. Find a soldier worth his or her salt and they probably have "re-appropriated" something during their time.
Chuck.

The Westchester County Veterans Service Agency has produced a newsletter. They would like to send it out to all Veterans in the County. If you want me to give them your address, call me or send an E-mail. I think you would like this newsletter, it is very professional looking. Also the first edition was about the "Trail of Honor". And the next one is going to feature the Museum.

Internet sites list ways to reach out to troops
Want to show your support for U.S. soldiers and their families as the war in Iraq continues? The Bush administration has compiled an Internet-based list to help you do so. The resources and suggestions, collectively called "On the Homefront." include information on how to send e-mail, electronic thank-you cards and care packages to deployed troops and how to contact charity groups that offer assistance to military families.
Through "Operation Dear Abby" (http://anyservicemember.navy.mil) e-mail can be sent to deployed troops of any service.
"Defend America" (http://www.defendamerica.mil/mnam.html) contains a  thank-you card to troops. The U.S. military set up both services.
Through "Operation USA Care Package" (http://www.usocares.org/home.htm), donations are accepted for purchasing items requested by troops, such as sunscreen, disposable cameras, prepaid calling cards and toiletries. That is a project sponsored by the United Services Organization, a non-profit group that supports the U.S. military, and America Online Inc.
Several civic organizations offer ways for volunteers to help local military families with such things as household repairs, spring cleaning, tutoring and child care. The groups include the American Legion, American Red Cross, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks of the USA, National 4-H Council, The Salvation Army, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the YMCA.
The Bush administration outline also suggests volunteering locally to help by mentoring children, teaching someone to read or working in a food shelter.
Find the "On the Homefront" options on the USA Freedom Corps Web site (http://www.usafreedomcorps.gov). Or call 877 USA CORPS.
