Additional Information for Medical Volunteers
The medical doctor in Uganda who works with our volunteers is Dr. Dominic Waburokoh, the Health Coordinator of the Archdiocese of Tororo.  His contact address is:  P.O. Box 25, Tororo, Uganda.  However, it might be easier if you direct any correspondence through our U.S. office in Bedford so that it can be forwarded by special arrangement.

The Archdiocese of Tororo has 16 medical units, one hospital with 120 beds, three Class IV health centers with between 50 to 70 beds each, and 12 Class III and Class II health centers.

Once the medical volunteer is in Uganda, the Archdiocese, through the Medical Department, will provide meals and accommodations.  The food available includes rice, maize flour, banana plantain, Irish potatoes, casava, millet, yams, beef (cow and goat), beans, cow peas, fish, pork, ground nuts and plenty of greens and fruit.

The volunteer will find the tropical medicine very interesting and challenging, with the gamut running from accidents to tropical diseases.  We list here some of the more common patient ailments:

Sexually transmitted diseases (AIDS/HIV), malaria, measles, protein energy malnutrition (kwashiorkor/ marasmas), whooping cough, tuberculosis, meningitis, viral encephalitis, poliomyelitis, tetanus, typhoid, brucellosis, trypanosomiasis, filariasis, cholera, shingles, acute infant diarrhea, helminthiasis (hook worms, ascariasis, tape worms, trichina), diseases of the eye (cataracts, etc.), diseases of the liver, diseases of the skin (psoriasis, leishmaniasis and schistosomiasis, as well as snake bites and poisoning.

Because of the number of traffic accidents, patients frequently have to be treated for wounds, fractures and trauma.  In this regard, you might wish to brush up on first aid and the application of plaster of Paris.

Prior to the arrival of the volunteer, Dr. Dominic Waburokoh will have worked out the particular program and will have assigned several medical personnel to assist the volunteer.

The nearest airport is Entebbe airport in Kampala where someone will meet the volunteer to continue the trip to Tororo.

Teachers
The minimum formal qualifications required for teachers in Uganda secondary schools are Bachelor of Education, or Bachelor's Degree in any appropriate subject with a Teacher's Certificate.

It is preferable that volunteer applicants have two years teaching experience, or one years teaching experience with Masters Degree in the appropriate subject.
